The compatibility gotcha we see regularly: a homeowner measures the outer chimney width and assumes that’s the crown size, but Gelco pre-cast crowns are sized by the flue tile’s outside dimension and the crown’s overhang spec, not the chimney’s overall width. A half-inch difference changes which part fits. Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing

• Water staining on ceiling or walls near the chimney. This is the most common first call. The stain means water has already pushed past the crown, through the chimney structure, and into the home’s framing. By the time you see it inside, the crown has usually been compromised for at least one season.
• Pieces of crown material around the base of the chimney. Spalling concrete or cracked pre-cast sections don’t break off in warm weather. Freeze-thaw cycles in Stamford winters force them apart, and you’ll typically find the debris after a hard freeze or heavy rain.
• Visible cracks wider than a dime. Hairline cracks are normal on older crowns and can be sealed. But when a crack reaches about 3/16 of an inch, the water intrusion is no longer a surface issue - it’s reaching the brick and mortar below, and that’s when the repair scope changes.
